Sonya Nguyen is an aspiring artist and creator of Blu’s Ukiyo.
Blu’s Ukiyo revolves around her original character/Alias Blu, as he is depicted traveling to different worlds, longing to find out who he is, where he is going and where he belongs.
‘Ukiyo’ is derived from a Japanese term that can be written in different two ways; each way has a completely new meaning.
The first way the term Ukiyo is written can mean ‘floating world’, which has the connation of ‘the world here and now’ or ‘a transitory world’.
The second way it can be a ‘sorrowful world’, which also implies ’a transitory world’, but with the implication that the present reality is ephemeral, or an illusion.
Thus, in combination the term Ukiyo can mean ‘to live in the moment, detached from the sorrows and troubles of life, which is how Blu came to be and how he views life.
Sonya explores this philosophical concept through her original watercolour paintings inspired by objects, emotions and experiences from our world, to create reimagined ecospheres for Blu to explore.
